On ‘WOW’ Experiences
Today, I held a beating heart in the palm of my hand. It would be too cliche to say that as doctors, we hold our patient’s well-being in our hands, but those few seconds with a newly bypass-grafted heart ticking away in my palm brought me back to a feeling of pure wonder and amazement that I hadn’t felt in a long, long time. The daily grind of menial ward tasks has a way of taking the shine off life in the medical world. Things that ought to be admired can become laborious and dull and it’s easy to lose sight of how close we as medical students are to doing truly amazing things. Like assisting in open-heart surgery and feeling the warm pulsing rhythm of a repaired heart.
Here’s to the small personal milestones that keep us in awe of the profession we’re striving to enter.
