“Lahat ng Interns na tumitira dito, pasado sa boards.”

The Hour Glass
Is it just me, or does the sand in an hour glass slip away faster and faster the closer the top half gets to empty…even though it’s really just going at the same rate the whole time? That’s how Internship feels.  The sand used to trickle by.  Now it’s gushing away, consumed in one big two-week gulp after the next. All there is to do, I guess, is look up and say...

If you're not #1...
…you’re nowhere. 2nd feels just as empty as 5th. Football can be a cruel, cruel mistress. Congratulations 2015, the better team won. Wear the crown well.

(Hep)Locked In
There are some duties when you just feel it.  Extractions are easy.  Lining is simple.  With a syringe or an IV cannula in hand, success is just one prick away.  Last night in the Pedia ER was one of those nights. IV insertion on a neonate?  Sure.  ABG extraction on a thrashing toddler?  Got it.  Venous extraction on an obese teenager?  Do you need 5 or 10 cc, Ma’am?  Reinserting on that...

What's Toxic?
What is ‘toxic’, really?  In PGH, we toss around the word everywhere—”sana hindi toxic sa ER”, “ang toxic ng duty kagabi!”, “toxic-magnet siya“—like it’s some inevitable reality we can’t escape no matter how hard we try.  For many people the aversion to being toxic can be enough to bind them together, like soldiers in battle....

No Looking Back
The saying goes that “if you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything”.  In that case, this is my experience in Ward 11 in a nutshell: … … … … … … … … … That is all.  Here’s to walking forward and never looking back.

Gen Ped 4: 12 patients, 3 residents, 1 me.   Over the next 7 days, I’m going to be the lone scut work machine that makes Gen Ped 4 go.  For better or for worse, it’s going to be a week to remember.   Bring it on.

On the Dream Cup
On the scoreboard, the end result may look lopsided—even embarrassing—but for the exhibition that Philippine football fans (or just David Beckham fans) were treated to tonight, the ‘Dream Cup’ was a success. For starters, there’s no denying that Becks, despite the fact that he is in the twilight of his career, is far and away the greatest football star to set foot in...

NtK
Just when I was really, truthfully, honestly getting the hang of fundoscopy, Ophtha ends.  For good. (+) ROR, CM, 2:3 AVR, DDB, 0.4 CDR, (-) H/E…it’s all just one big ‘nice to know’ (NtK) now, and this is only the beginning.  I have a feeling that the majority of my textbook education in medical school is going to be relegated to NtK status pretty soon. The sum total of...

On The Beautiful Game
In 20 years of playing football, last weekend was by far the lowest point in my footballing life.  Leading my beloved FC Medisina into battle with such high expectations, only to be unceremoniously thrashed by a lesser opponent has scarred me more than I thought it would.  It’s a humiliation that I will remember for a long time to come. As the saying goes, “you cannot know the light...

On 'Duty Lenses'
What a difference a day can make. The most memorable patient from Monday’s Trauma duty was a 20 year old female, brought in for a stab wound to the abdomen.  Scared, in pain and disoriented, the woman was brought in by her drunk husband, only to be abandoned once she had the Trauma team’s attention.  This began a long list of irritating inconveniences that marked this patient as the...

On 'WOW' Experiences
Today, I held a beating heart in the palm of my hand.  It would be too cliche to say that as doctors, we hold our patient’s well-being in our hands, but those few seconds with a newly bypass-grafted heart ticking away in my palm brought me back to a feeling of pure wonder and amazement that I hadn’t felt in a long, long time.  The daily grind of menial ward tasks has a way of taking...
